From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by a warm ambiance that feels both cozy and intimate. It's the type of place where you can savor every bite while engaging in comforting conversation. The first thing to draw your attention might be the appetizing Steamed Dumplings in Curry Sauce. Available with chicken, veggie, or even vegan options, these dumplings are a vibrant start to your meal. Pair them with the crispy Fried Egg Rolls—stuffed with a delightful mix of carrot, cabbage, and glass noodles—for a perfect combination of textures and flavors.
As for the soups, the Tom Kah Soup is a standout. Infused with aromatic lemongrass and creamy coconut milk, it embodies the rich essence of Thai cuisine. On a chilly day, few things are more comforting. For those seeking something refreshing, the Shrimp Som Tum offers a bright medley of green papaya, shrimp, and a zesty lime dressing that dances on your palate.
Main dishes are where Summer Buffalo truly shines. The Pad Thai—a classic staple—combines shrimp, chicken, tofu, and eggs with perfectly cooked rice noodles that are simply delightful. On the other hand, the Pad See Ew with its flat rice noodles, is wholly satisfying, featuring a sauté of chicken and broccoli in a soy sauce that balances sweet and savory perfectly. For something hearty, I can't recommend the Spicy Basil Fried Rice enough—each bite bursts with flavor.
The sweet endings at Summer Buffalo are just as enticing; the Mango Sticky Rice is a favorite among regulars, offering a pleasing finish to your Thai culinary experience. Many customers appreciate the attention to detail from a staff that truly seems to care about your dining experience. As one patron, Luis Mariduena, noted, the quality of the food is impressive—even if the name doesn't scream 'Thai'," which adds to the endearing charm of the place.
In summary, Summer Buffalo (Melrose) is more than just a restaurant; it's a vibrant corner of Thailand in the heart of Los Angeles. With fair prices, fresh ingredients, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, it’s perfect for both casual meals and special occasions. Whether you're craving a plate of Drunken Noodles or a bowl of Dumpling Soup, this establishment guarantees a memorable dining experience that will draw you back time and again.
“ The food is really good, I would say very good quality. Even the name doesnt sell as a Thai food restaurant it has been a good decision coming in by first time and wont be the last. The service is fast and friendly. I recommend to try the Mango Avocado Shrimp Salad ... ”
“ This is a nice, small, quaint place with great service and delicious food. Its a smaller, more intimate type of restaurant that serves Thai food. I was with my daughter and we both had the Thai Tea which was very good. We ordered egg rolls for an appetizer, then she had the Snow Crab Meat Fried Rice and I had the Garlic Chicken Noodle. We both were full after eating just half of our meals so we were able to bring the other half home. The female server was really pleasant and helpful didnt catch her name but she saw my daughter looked cold as we came in from a day event and my daughter had on a short sleeve shirt but we were seated at a table by the door and there was a cool draft coming in. So the server turned on the heat in the restaurant just for my daughter. And she was sure to check on us throughout eating our meal to make sure we were good. Id definitely return. My daughter had been here before but it had been a long time and she wasnt sure if it was still there or where it had moved to, when we stumbled upon it. There is 2 hour street parking nearby and a few metered spots, but must be careful as theres also permit parking too. But the 2 hr parking is available in the permit parking area but cant park there between 8pm and 8am. Theres also a paid parking lot behind the restaurant that I saw cost 12 we parked on the street during the 2 hr allowance. ”
“ It was great!! A small, laid back corner spot. They have some indoor and outdoor seating. Unique selection of fresh food. Friendly service and fair prices. ”
“ I have been going here for years and they never fail. It is by far my favorite Thai in Los Angeles. The prices are fair, the ingredients are fresh, and I have been so happy about their recent beyond meat additions to the menu! ”
“ Summer Buffalo is our favorite Thai restaurant in the area and weve tried many. Were pretty basic and always get the summer rolls to start followed by the Pad Thai and Pad See Ew for our mains. For dessert we often get the Mangi Sticky Rice. All of the above are delicious. The only criticism I can come up with is that I wish the tofu in the Pad See Ew was crispy. ”
“ Not gonna lie, this place is actually a great addition to the eateries at Melrose...and compared to the most places here, its affordable. Food is tasty, has a great variety, and they have lunch specials. Definitely would be back to try more things. Only got to try the Pad See Ew, Sweet and Tangy Wings, and the Grilled Pork Butt with a side of rice. ”
“ Had larb and khao soi gai and loved both! These are two super delicious, super authentic dishes that a lot of Thai places dont bother with. I love that SB has them, and they were both punchy, balanced, and oh so savory. I also liked the atmosphere and service! ”
“ Summer Buffalo on Melrose is one of those rare spots that delivers every time. The food is consistently flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. Ive had several dishes here, but the Pad See Ew and Panang Curry are standoutsbold, comforting, and perfectly balanced. Spice levels are on point too, so dont be afraid to ask for medium or hot if youre into heat. The vibe is casual but cute, perfect for a lowkey dinner or catching up with friends. Staff is always friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Parking can be a little tricky hey, its Melrose, but the food more than makes up for it. A mustvisit if youre craving Thai in LA. ”
